Secrets of Strixhaven arrived on MTG Arena today and Wizards pre-banned five Mystical Archive cards from Historic before a single game was played.

Armageddon. Daze. Force of Will. Vampiric Tutor. Library of Alexandria.

Three of those are completely clean calls. One has a specific interaction with the current Historic meta that makes the reasoning more interesting than it looks. And one is a philosophy call rather than a power level call that has the community genuinely divided.

Silverquill, the Disputant is a new four-mana Elder Dragon from Secrets of Strixhaven and it does something white-black Commander has never quite done at this scale before.

Every instant and sorcery spell you cast gets Casualty 1 automatically. That means for the price of one token, every removal spell can be copied, every card draw spell draws twice as many cards, every board wipe happens twice. Not as a combo. Not under specific conditions. Every single spell. All game.

The strategy combines aristocrats and spellslinger in a way that makes both better. Here is how the engine works.

Sedgemoor Witch has Magecraft, which means it creates a 1/1 Pest token whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery. One spell with Silverquill in play creates two Pest tokens, one on cast and one on copy, both immediately available as sacrifice fodder for the next Casualty trigger. The deck makes its own ammunition.

Blood Artist drains one life from each opponent every time any creature dies. Every Casualty sacrifice is a drain trigger. Teysa Karlov doubles every death trigger, turning each sacrifice into two drains. Monastery Mentor creates a Monk token with Prowess every time you cast a noncreature spell, keeping the sacrifice fodder topped up.

Which college are you picking?

Here is the honest breakdown of all five.

Lorehold (white/red) is for players who want to know exactly what their deck is doing from turn one. Attack with Spirit tokens. Flashback your removal spells from the graveyard. Win before your opponent figures out what happened. Best for beginners and aggressive players.

Prismari (blue/red) is for spellslingerswho want to cast something expensive and watch something explode. The Opus mechanic rewards going big and rewards it harder the more mana you commit. Best for players who find Izzet instinctively comfortable.

Silverquill (white/black) is for experienced players who enjoy making opponents feel confused about whether they are winning or losing. Repartee triggers before the spell resolves, which means your removal spell is doing two things before the creature even dies. Stack awareness required.

Witherbloom, the Balancer is a new Elder Dragon from Secrets of Strixhaven, and the cEDH community is already building around it before the set even releases.

Here is what it does: it has affinity for creatures, so it costs one less to cast for each creature you control. And then every instant and sorcery spell you cast also has affinity for creatures. Every single one. Your whole deck gets cheaper the bigger your board is.

With four creatures in play and Sprout Swarm in hand, the combo is live. Sprout Swarm has Convoke and Buyback, and Witherbloom discounts the total cost, including the Buyback to zero. You cast it, tap one creature to pay the Convoke cost, get a Saproling back, and the spell returns to your hand. Infinite tokens at instant speed on any end step. Then you add Phyrexian Altar for infinite mana and point Torment of Hailfire at the table for X of whatever number ends the game.

That is the deck. The early game is mana dorks and Beast Whisperer keeping the hand full. The mid-game is Scute Swarm, Chatterfang, and Parallel Lives multiplying the board. The late game is Torment of Hailfire or Finale of Devastation for a number that makes people scoop.

Secrets of Strixhaven prerelease is April 17, and each of the five colleges has its own exclusive mechanic for the first time in this setting. Here is what you need to know before you sit down at a table.

Repartee is the Silverquill mechanic. It triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery targeting any creature, including your opponents' creatures. All Repartee abilities resolve before the spell that triggered them, which means if you target a creature with removal, your Repartee bonus fires before the creature dies.

Opus is the Prismari mechanic. It triggers on any instant or sorcery and gives you a bigger bonus if you spent five or more mana. Kicker costs and additional costs count toward that threshold. Free spells do not.

Infusion is the Witherbloom mechanic. It checks whether you gained any life during the turn. One point is enough. It does not matter if your life total went down overall, only that a gain happened at some point.

Flashback is the Lorehold mechanic and the only returning ability among the five. It lets you cast spells from the graveyard for a separate Flashback cost. How the card got there does not matter. Flashback sorceries are still cast at sorcery speed.

Here is what Paradigm does: you cast a sorcery spell with the keyword once, it exiles itself when it resolves, and from that point forward you get a free copy of it at the beginning of every single one of your first main phases for the rest of the game. Not once. Not twice. Every turn. For free. And if an opponent counters a copy, the trigger fires again next turn and gives you another one. You also see your draw for the turn before the trigger fires, so you always know whether you want to use it or hold it.

It is also a deliberate redesign of Epic, the infamous Saviors of Kamigawa mechanic from 2005 that did something similar but locked you out of casting any other spell for the rest of the game forever the moment you used it.
